Losing weight can seem like a daunting tasks to some, especially with all the information out there to digest and make sense of. For those that take on this daunting task, the road ahead can be full of potential pitfalls to knock you off the rails without the right guidance.
With this in mind, here are some pitfalls you should try and avoid if you want to make your diet a success.
Don’t Think It, Do It
Try to stop thinking the word ‘diet’ every mealtime. It makes the whole thing sound too much like a chore, when in reality it should be a lifestyle change and can be fun. Resolve to make a few healthy changes to your lifestyle that you can live with, and you will soon stop thinking you are on a diet.
Wise Up To Portion Size
When we see a recipe that tells us to serve one medium potato or one portion of rice, many of us don’t actually know how big ‘one portion’ is. As a result we tend to over compensate and end up eating more than the recipe recommended.
As a rule of thumb – a medium potato is about the size of a computer mouse, a portion of meat is about the size of a deck of cards and a portion of rice or pasta is about a cupful.
Don’t Procrastinate
To lose weight you should be combining your healthier meals with some exercise. The problem is many people simply keep putting this off, often with the excuse that they don’t have time.
If you think you don’t have time to put in a few sessions of exercise a week, get this. Barack Obama recently told a leading health magazine that he still exercises for 45 minutes a day, 6 days a week. Now he is quite a busy guy, but if he can manage to find the time then you have no excuses!
Over Doing It
The other end of the spectrum with exercise is over doing it. While hitting the gym every day might sound like a good idea, it could be doing more harm than good. You will put yourself at a greater risk of injury as muscles and joints become overworked doing the same repetitive exercises every day. There is also the risk that you will get bored quickly and quit altogether. Give your body at least 1 rest day a week, and try to vary the types of exercises you do.
Be A Believer
For any weight loss program to work, you have to believe it will. Having a mindset of ‘well I’ll try it and see what happens’ will usually end in failure. Tell yourself that you will succeed, then go about putting together a plan of realistic lifestyle changes that you know you can stick to. Set yourself some goals to give yourself something to work towards, and promise yourself you won’t quit until you hit those goals.

Weight problems and obesity in children has been on the rise for many years now, and it is estimated that 80% of overweight kids will go on to be overweight adults. By allowing your kids to remain overweight, you could be lining them up for an adult life fraught with health problems such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and coronary heart disease.
If you don’t take action now with your child’s weight problems, you will be sending a message to them that it is OK to be overweight and unhealthy.
Set Realistic Goals
If your child has gradually been putting on weight, then your first goal should be to alter their diet and lifestyle to just stop more weight being put on.
Once their weight has levelled out and they have become accustomed to more sensible eating and exercise, you can take it a step further and set a goal of achievable weight loss.
Don’t Let Them Go It Alone
The best way you can motivate your child to become healthier is if the whole family joins in. To single out the one fat kid and put them on a different diet than the rest of your family would harm their self esteem, and this would make them prone to secret snacking on comfort food.
Remember, as a parent you are your child’s biggest role model, set a good example by deciding to eat healthier and exercise more yourself.
Healthier Eating
It is important that your child still gets all the nutrients they need, as well as being able to lose weight. They should be getting 3 well balanced meals each day, with plenty of fresh vegetables that will help them feel full without piling on the pounds.
Always try to read the nutrition labels of the food you are giving your family to check the calorie and fat content, and avoid those that are too high in either. Encouraging your child to drink plenty of water will help too, as this will also help them feel full and they can avoid the sugary fizzy drinks that only add to the calorie intake.
Get Them Exercising
One way to get your child to start exercising is to encourage them to take up an active sport, perhaps after school. Make sure it is something your child enjoys doing. Another option could be to get your child to cycle or walk to school, instead of taking them by car.

Many people try to lose weight simply because they want to look better and feel more attractive, but there are more important factors than simple vanity to consider when deciding you are going to make the effort to slim down.
The negative effect being overweight can have on your health is something you shouldn’t ignore, because the longer you go doing nothing the worse the effect on your health will be.
So how does being overweight effect your health?
1) Type 2 Diabetes
Sufferers of this disease, characterized by higher than normal blood sugar levels, are more often than not also overweight (85 percent). This is because being overweight causes insulin resistance in the person, meaning that persons cells cannot take up the blood sugar normally carried by the insulin.
Experts suggest that losing weight through daily moderate exercise can delay, and even stop, the onset of type 2 diabetes.
2) Coronary Heart Disease
This occurs when the heart and the circulation of the blood stop working properly. In many cases this is because the arteries have become hardened and narrowed, disrupting the blood flow. When the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart (heart attack) or brain (stroke) is disrupted the resulting damage is often irreparable, making coronary heart disease the number 1 cause of death in the United States today.
An overweight person is at risk because they often develop high blood pressure, as well as too much bad cholesterol. The fatty tissue in excess body fat can also cause inflammation in blood vessels, which also increases the risk of heart disease.
3) Fatty Liver Disease
This is caused by a build up of fat in the liver cells, leading to injury and inflammation. Although liver disease is commonly associated with alcohol abuse, this type of liver disease can occur in people who do not drink at all. And just like alcoholic liver disease, fatty liver disease can lead to cirrhosis and eventually liver failure.
Fatty liver disease commonly occurs in overweight people who have already developed type 2 diabetes, although in some cases it can occur in someone who has never had diabetes.
So there you have it – 3 very good reasons why being overweight is bad for your health, and 3 very good reasons to do something about it.
The good news is it is almost never too late to do something to stop the onset of any of these conditions. Just losing 5% of your body weight will severely reduce your risk of developing any of the above. Gradual weight loss through a combination of sensible dieting and moderate exercise should be enough to get most people out of the danger zone, and the added bonus is that you will look and feel much better too!
